Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 – 1669) is widely considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history and the most important in Dutch history.   What interests me is the incomparable, ineffable mood Rembrandt establishes in all his work.  I’m posting here a small, representative sample of Rembrandt’s painting.  It’s hard to pinpoint what, precisely, makes them so special, but to me it’s a combination of startling humanity, rendered in earthen tones, washed in warm light and emerging from rich darkness as though right out of time.  Poetry.

I think the atmosphere he captures with the subtle extremes from darkness to warm candlelight flooding the spaces he rendered with so deft a touch is what makes them genius, but what do I know? I was amazed truly at just how BIG they are! The Nightwatch is like 8’x14′ or so. Maybe bigger. He also painted a real cool Swan
