Channeling J. Alden Weir

J. Alden Weir, The Red Bridge (c. 1875-90)

In researching my last couple of blog posts about the group of Ten American Painters (also known as “The Ten”) I ran across J.Alden Weir’s painting The Red Bridge (above).  As soon as I saw it I realized how it connects with my own painting of a similar subject a couple of months ago — Oakalla Bridge, Putnam County, Indiana (below).  There was no premeditation on my part.  It seems to be an example of two people picking roughly the same subject and angle.  I suppose certain subjects just naturally lend themselves to a specific sort of composition.  Anyway, it was interesting so I thought I’d share it.
