Bob Baker, Landscape With Tree, Gethsemani Abbey (2012)

Here’s my latest.  For this one I once again modeled the painting on a similar work by one of my favorite artists, Thomas Anshutz.  Anshutz, you will recall, was a student of realist painter Thomas Eakins and succeeded Eakins as leader of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.  His list of students includes such notables as George Luks, Charles Demuth, John French Sloan, Charles Sheeler, Everett Shinn, John Marin, William Glackens and Robert Henri.

I wanted to absorb Anshutz’s loose brushwork and simplicity, so I modeled my painting on Anshutz’s Landscape With Tree and Building (below).  Also below is my reference photo.
