Announcement: I Will Have Two Paintings Showing at LaGrange Art League in May

Bob Baker, Gethsemani Abbey (2011)

Hello, world!  Just a quick announcement.  I’m entering two paintings in the upcoming student show at the LaGrange Art League, located at 122 Calendar Avenue, LaGrange, Illinois (in Calendar Court Mall, for all you locals).  The show runs from May 7 through May 31.

The two paintings, posted here, are from my visit to Gethsemani Abbey last October.  The first, Gethsemani Abbey, depicts the Abbey church in late afternoon light.  The second, Gethsemani Abbey Grounds, depicts a section of the Abbey property at mid-afternoon.  For the latter I limited my palette to Burnt Sienna, Cobalt Blue and Yellow Ochre to get more of a Renaissance feel.  Gethsemani is a favorite subject of mine.  It’s best known as the temporal and spiritual home of its most famous monk, Thomas Merton.  I’m headed back to Gethsemani next month.

So if you’re in the neighborhood please stop in and check out the show.  In addition to my two paintings there will be many other works on display by students and faculty.  My oil painting guru is Jim Swanson, who has a one-man show going on at the Art League until this coming Saturday.  Thanks, Jim, for teaching me an awful lot of new stuff about oil painting over the past year!

Congratulations on showing these, old sport. I really like both of them. They’re reminders of a great day at the abbey, too.

Is that you, Mark? You popped up as “Anonymous.” Yup the old Abbey was in rare form that day.

Thanks, Jane! It is fun. Actually, as luck would have it, I’m headed back to Gethsemani next month while the paintings are on display. Will have some new images to work from.
