Maynard Dixon (1875 – 1946) was a 20th-century American artist whose work focused on the American West. He was married for a time to American photographer Dorothea Lange.  Born in Fresno, California, Dixon hailed from a transplanted, post-Civil War aristocratic Southern family.  He created simple yet powerful compositions in which non-essential elements were simplified or altogether eliminated.  He reminds me a lot of one of my other great favorites, the Canadian artist Tom Thomson.  Isn’t Dixon’s work striking?
