Ludwig Bemelmans (1898-1962) is best known as the illustrator of the famous Madeline children’s books and as the author of several famous covers of The New Yorker.  Bemelmans also created the wall art at Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle Hotel in New York.  The story is that Bemelmans was offered a free extended stay at the hotel, for himself and his family, in exchange for illustrating the walls of the bar.  The bar is beautiful and not to be missed!  If you’re in New York check out the Loston Harris Trio that performs there each week.

In Study in Red Bemelmans displays a wonderful grace — a sense of line, color and mood — that reminds us he was an artist of the first order.  Love it.
